Ontario Pt. 2(6) - Kakabeka Falls
The detour to see the Kakabeka Falls is well worth it if you dig waterfalls like we do.
The road comes across the river from the top of the falls and you can hear it long before you can see it.
This water feature is obviously not as voluminous as the waterfall at Niagara, but surrounded here by beautiful provincial park, instead of strip clubs and casinos, the setting is much more enjoyable.
We set up at a picnic table to have lunch with Sophie who had arrived a little while before us.
Ok, so this next part you’re not going to believe.
A gentleman approached the bikes to ask us where we were from and where we were headed. He was quite interested in our journey, because he was also a cycle traveller as well and had ridden most all of the highways in the country. He has been riding the Canadian roads since 1976 and….. and then we recognized him….
It took a sec because he was not wearing his bright yellow from head to toe, and because it was not making sense to us that…. are there two of them?! but here with us at Kakabeka Falls was HIGH-VIS PAUL that we had met on the Kettle Valley Trail in the Rocky Mountains a month ago.
Paul had finished his bike trip in Victoria and had visited the Gulf Islands on our recommendation. He had flown back to Ottawa and was now on a camper trip up to the Yukon. The odds that he would be passing through the Kakabeka provincial park in the same hour that we were are impossible to calculate.
All of us were a little mind blown. It felt like such a small country in that moment!
After goodbyes with Paul, we also said goodbye to Sophie who had plans to get further past Thunder Bay than us and would likely pull ahead of us for good.
We watched her head off up the hill having been a delightful part of our trip.
For all the incredible scenery we’ve been traversing past and through, it’s been the people that we’ve met that have been the most memorable and enjoyable experiences.
We laughed again at how social this activity is and headed off for Thunder Bay to meet Francesco (Frank) who would be hosting us in his home that night.
